This Privacy Policy explains how Slate Learning, Inc. ("Slate," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you access or use Slate websites, applications, accounts, and learning experiences (collectively, the "Services").
Slate is a learning platform that helps learners navigate courses as structured learning worlds, work through adaptive study sessions, answer questions, receive feedback, and track progress toward mastery and deadlines. This notice applies to information processed in connection with those Services.

1. Information We Collect
We collect information that you provide to us, information generated by your use of the Services, and limited information collected automatically when you use Slate.
1.1 Account Information
When you create or use an account, we may collect your name, email address, password or sign-in method, account settings, profile information you choose to provide, and information needed to authenticate and maintain your account.
1.2 Learning Information
When you use Slate, we may collect information about your learning activity, including courses or worlds you access, sessions you start, questions you answer, responses you submit, feedback you receive, explanations you view, concepts or skills you practice, progress, mastery estimates, review history, deadlines, and other information needed to personalize and operate your learning experience.
1.3 Course, Cohort, and Class Information
If you join a course, cohort, class, pilot, or organization-based experience, we may collect information related to that participation, such as enrollment, class or cohort membership, assigned learning materials, deadlines, completion status, and related administrative information.
1.4 Communications
If you contact us, respond to surveys, request support, submit feedback, or otherwise communicate with us, we may collect the content of those communications and related contact information.
1.5 Automatically Collected Information
When you use Slate, we may automatically collect technical and usage information, including IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, referring pages, pages or features used, timestamps, session events, diagnostic information, and similar information used to operate, secure, and improve the Services.
2. Information We Receive From Google Sign-In
If you choose to sign in with Google, Slate may receive information from your Google account that you authorize, such as your name, email address, profile image, and account identifier.
We use this information to authenticate you, create or manage your Slate account, display basic account information where appropriate, prevent abuse, and protect your account. We do not sell Google user data, use it for advertising, or use it for purposes unrelated to providing and securing the Services.
You may manage or revoke Google's access permissions through your Google account settings. Slate's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including any applicable Limited Use requirements.
3. How We Use Information
We use information for the following purposes:
- To provide the Services. We use information to create accounts, authenticate users, operate learning worlds, provide study sessions, present questions and explanations, track progress, and maintain user settings.
- To personalize learning. We use learning activity to estimate mastery, choose or sequence practice, generate or adapt feedback, identify review needs, and help learners prepare for deadlines.
- To operate classes, cohorts, and pilots. We use information to administer enrollments, assignments, deadlines, completion, and related learning workflows.
- To communicate with you. We use information to send account, security, password reset, service, support, and administrative messages.
- To maintain and improve Slate. We use information to debug issues, understand usage, improve learning quality, develop new features, and evaluate whether the Services are working as intended.
- To protect Slate and our users. We use information to detect, prevent, and investigate fraud, abuse, security incidents, unauthorized access, and technical problems.
- To comply with legal obligations. We use information to comply with applicable laws, enforce agreements, respond to lawful requests, and protect rights, safety, and property.
4. How We Disclose Information
We do not sell personal information. We also do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing or advertising purposes.
We may disclose information in the following circumstances:
- Service Providers. We may disclose information to vendors and service providers that perform services for us, such as hosting, authentication, email delivery, security, analytics, infrastructure, and customer support. These providers are authorized to process information only as needed to provide services to Slate.
- Course, Cohort, or Organization Administrators. If you use Slate through a class, cohort, school, company, or other organization, we may disclose information needed to administer that experience, such as account status, enrollment, learning activity, progress, completion, and related reporting.
- At Your Direction or With Your Consent. We may disclose information when you ask us to do so, authorize an integration, participate in a feature that requires disclosure, or otherwise give us permission.
- Legal, Safety, and Compliance Purposes. We may disclose information if we believe disclosure is required by law, legal process, or a lawful request, or if disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, security, or safety of Slate, our users, or others.
- Business Transfers. If Slate is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be disclosed or transferred as part of that transaction, subject to appropriate protections.
5. Cookies, Local Storage, and Security Tools
Slate uses cookies, local storage, session storage, and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, maintain sessions, operate features, prevent abuse, and improve reliability.
We may also use security and abuse-prevention tools that process technical signals about your browser, device, network, or interactions with Slate. These tools help distinguish legitimate users from automated or abusive activity.
You may be able to control cookies or local storage through your browser settings. Disabling these technologies may prevent parts of Slate from working correctly.
6. Educational and Class-Related Information
Slate is designed for learning. Learning information may include educational records or student-related information depending on how the Services are used and who provides access.
If Slate is used through a school, class, cohort, instructor, employer, or other organization, that organization may control or administer certain information associated with the experience. In those cases, we may process information to provide the Services to that organization and its users, and the organization may have access to information necessary to administer the learning experience.
7. De-Identified and Aggregated Information
We may create and use de-identified or aggregated information to understand usage, improve learning quality, evaluate product performance, develop new features, and communicate general information about Slate.
We do not attempt to re-identify de-identified information except as permitted by law, such as to test whether our de-identification processes are effective.
8. Communications
We may send transactional emails, including account verification, password reset, security, service, and administrative notices. These messages are necessary to provide and secure your account.
If Slate sends marketing or product update emails, you may opt out using the unsubscribe instructions in those emails. You may still receive transactional or service-related emails.
9. Data Retention
We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Services, maintain accounts, support learning continuity, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, prevent abuse, and operate backups.
When information is no longer needed, we delete, de-identify, or isolate it from active use where reasonable. Some information may remain in backups, logs, or archival systems for a limited period before deletion.
10. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. These measures are intended to reduce the risk of unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration.
No internet service can guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for promptly notifying us if you believe your account has been compromised.
11. Children and Students
Slate is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without legally required consent. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child under 13 without required consent, we will take steps to delete it.
If you are under the age of majority where you live, you should use Slate only with the involvement of a parent, guardian, school, instructor, or other authorized adult.
12. Your Choices and Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, restrict, or object to certain uses of your personal information.
You may also be able to control certain information through account settings, browser settings, email preferences, and Google account permissions.

13. International Users
Slate is operated from the United States. If you access the Services from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored in, or processed in the United States or other countries where we or our service providers operate.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and may provide additional notice through the Services or by email.
